Logging

Cottles is operating their own logging and trucking operations. The majority of the forest is harvested with cut to length processing heads and log sorting in the forest. Pulpwood is designated for a local pulp mill and saw logs are trucked to the sawmill site. The wood  chips are sold back to the pulp mill.

Sawmill

The sawmill has a capacity of approximate 50 000  board feet of sawn lumber per day. Once the logs enter the mill a ring debarker removes the bark prior to the primary breakdown. The primary brake down consists of a twin canter and a thin kerf twin saw making chips out of the outer slabs, side boards and two sided cants.   The secondary brake down is a canter bull where a set of chipping heads removes the slabs and a set of thin kerf guided saws cuts the cants into boards. A Chipping edger is re-edging all side boards and returns form the trimmer. A drop saw trimmer cuts all lumber to the proper length prior being stacked for the lumber dryer.

The bark is sold for biomass, the wood chips from the sawmill are sold to the pulp mill, the sawdust is processed in the pellet mill, the green lumber is dried and processed into value added products.

Dry kiln

The mill has several side loading dry kilns to dry al lumber to 15% to 19% of moisture, some wood is dried lower depending on the final product that will be manufactured. The heat source is an onsite boiler. The shavings from the moulding plant are used for the fuel for the step grate boiler.

Moulder

The mill site has a complete moulder set up with bundle breakdown a Weinig moulder and precision end trim system and a stacker. The mill is also equipped with a profile grinding machine  in order to be able to make any custom profile within the machines capacity.
